Got the new electric bill and about choked. Up almost 40 percent from last year, no new appliances, no extra AC use, nothing on my end changed at all.

Turns out the county approved a new data center campus about four miles out last year and nobody mailed us a notice, we just started seeing it on the rate sheet this cycle. The co-op guy on the phone was pretty upfront about it actually, said more demand means higher base rates for everyone on the grid now.

My neighbor's been going to the county meetings trying to get answers on the water usage too, they're pulling from the same aquifer we are for our wells.

Anyone else just finding out why their bill jumped after the fact instead of before any of this got approved?

  1. maybe im overthinking it but this is making me want to check if anything new got approved near us too, i never would have thought to look...

    Anonymous Badger,

  2. This happened in our county last year as well. The rate increase was listed in the utility filing but not advertised anywhere else. Worth checking your state's public utility commission site directly.
