Ive been keeping a mental tally of every layoff headline since january and it finally caught up to me this week. over 200000 tech jobs cut so far this year, and the share of companies openly blaming ai for the cuts jumped from something like 7 percent in january to 40 percent by may. that jump is what gets me. its not just cost cutting anymore, its companies saying the quiet part out loud. microsoft trimmed the xbox side again this month, amazon and uber both had rounds too, and monday.com joined the list which surprised me since they always seemed like one of the good ones to work for. i talked to a friend who survived three rounds of cuts at his company and he said the scariest part isnt losing the job, its watching the job description get quietly split between fewer people and a chatbot. i dont have a neat conclusion here. i just think we should be talking about this more openly instead of pretending everyone whos still employed is fine. we are not fine, we are just still on the list for now.
