Second dentist today told me I need a root canal urgently... same tooth the first dentist said last month just needed a regular filling. Who am I supposed to trust here?

ask each for the x-rays and get a third opinion from a university dental school. usually cheaper and more conservative

Get a third opinion, seriously. Dental diagnosis varies a lot depending on how conservative the dentist is. Some prefer to watch and wait, others like to intervene early.
