How do you even pick a new direction when the thing you trained for years to do doesn't need as many people anymore?

Freelance copywriting work dried up over the last six months, clients that used to need five drafts now just want one AI pass and light editing, and they're not wrong that it's cheaper for them. I don't want to fight the tide here, I want to actually move into something adjacent that still uses the parts of this job I was good at. Problem is every reskilling course online looks the same and I can't tell which ones are worth the money before I'm three weeks and two hundred dollars into one that goes nowhere. Anyone actually found something that matched you to a new skill path based on what you already do well, instead of just picking off a dropdown menu? Any advice?

  1. I went through something similar after my agency cut freelance budgets. What helped was finding a mentor already working in the adjacent field rather than a generic course. Might be worth searching for a practitioner who offers short paid consultations instead of a full program. Thanks in advance for anyone else's suggestions too.

  2. Picked a course off a dropdown once. Learned a lot about that company's refund policy.
