Saw the buyout numbers this morning before I'd even had coffee. A quarter of a workforce, just gone, dressed up as a generous offer to leave on your own terms.

I'm not at that company. Doesn't matter. Every person on my team read the same headline at their desk today and you could feel the room get quiet in a way that has nothing to do with the actual news and everything to do with what it means might be coming for the rest of us.

My manager sent a cheerful message an hour later about Q4 goals like nothing happened. I guess that's the job now, reading two timelines at once and pretending you only see one of them.

  1. Seen this exact pattern three times now. Never ends with the department getting smaller just once.
