How do you actually explain a resume gap without sounding like you're apologizing for your own life. Took fourteen months off to take care of my mom after her stroke and now every interview gets to that one line on the timeline and I can feel the energy in the room change. I've tried three different ways of phrasing it and none of them land right. Does anything exist that helps you actually practice this out loud instead of just writing a better bullet point?

  1. I had a similar gap after a medical leave. What helped me was writing out a short, factual explanation in advance so I was not improvising under pressure. Practicing out loud with a friend made a noticeable difference. Best of luck with your search.

  2. the gap itself matters way less than how shaky you sound explaining it. practice helped me more than any resume rewrite did

  3. This is SO real. I had the same gap and practicing out loud genuinely helped more than rewriting the bullet point ever did.

  4. I used a mock interview service that specializes in practicing exactly this kind of question out loud. It helped me a lot more than tweaking the resume did.
